“Business is the Greatest Platform for Change” - Marc Benioff

Recently, I watched a Washington Post interview with Marc Benioff, the founder and CEO of Salesforce. Salesforce is the $20 billion (revenue) cloud-based CRM company that started the Pledge-1% movement. Since its founding in 1999, Salesforce has given $300 million in grants and more than 4 million hours in volunteer time. It has also donated system and product access to more than 40,000 nonprofits and non-governmental entities for free or at steep discounts. Amazing story.

In the interview, Benioff talked about the massive problems he sees in current-day society. He made the point that large problems need significant resources deployed against them to make meaningful progress. He noted that the largest pool of resources in the US and around the world is the private sector: business.

This is where the 1% Pledge comes in. The Pledge is a way to motivate the business community to deploy a small part of its product, profits, employee time and equity to the problems of interest to each participating company. Collectively, as the movement grows, the pool of resources applied to various problems will grow and impacts of the Pledge will become visible. Ideally, this will create the elusive ‘virtuous cycle’ of growing Pledge participation and impact, leading to a fairer, healthier, safer, cleaner, more prosperous world.

This all makes great sense to me. It is exciting to be part of the Pledge-1% movement and to have the freedom to look for ways that SeaFreight Labs can make a positive impact on the global community in which we operate.

Encourage your company to join the Pledge-1% movement. Make a public commitment to contributing resources to the effort of creating a better world.

Join me in the #SeaFreight1percentPledge!
